EXPRESSIVE THERAPY
Q. What is Expressive Therapy?
A. Expressive therapy includes all forms of artistic expression: paintings, drawings, clay creations, collages or mask creation; stories written and illustrated by the child; photography, especially that done as a documentary; and sand tray therapy. It also includes play and movement activities.
Q. Why Expressive Therapy?
A. Children who are seriously ill, and their siblings, are coping with an incredible range of emotions, feelings and thoughts. Children aren't able to express their inner world through language alone. Expressive therapy can be a powerful tool in providing an alternative form to help in understanding and expressing feelings and thoughts.
Q. Who benefits from Expressive Therapy?
A. For every patient we help with expressive therapy, we also have a ripple effect on their family members. By reaching one, we help many.
WINGS IN THE CITY BUTTERFLY
Q. Why the Butterfly?
A. Not only is the butterfly the “logo” for Friends of Wings, but the butterfly is the universal symbol of change, resurrection, transformation, and celebration. It represents the meaning of Friends of Wings.
Q. Why Wings in the Citysm now?
A. Wings in the Citysm is the primary fundraiser for our Expressive Therapy Endowment which was kicked off in 2009. The marriage of public art and expressive therapy is a great way for us to reach the community, create awareness and gain support for our effort.
Q. What is the butterfly made of?
A. The butterfly is a 5x4 foot fiberglass form that weighs approximately 50 pounds.
Q. Can the butterfly stay outside?
A. The butterfly can remain outside in all types of weather. The form is fiberglass, the same material used in making cars.
Q. Can a sponsor “buy back” the butterfly?
A. Yes, and we welcome that! At the time of singing their contract they can check the "hold out" option. They reserve the right to own their butterfly for the price of $5,000.
Q. Who wants to own a butterfly?
A. Everyone wants to own a butterfly! They make wonderful art for a residential garden OR a fantastic conversation piece for a business.
Q. How will money be raised for the raffle butterfly?
A. The raffle butterfly is very special and is going to be featured at all of the Friends of Wings events in 2010 & 2011. We are so proud to have Robin Zarzecki – a local artist who has personally experienced the benefits of the Wings program – designing our butterfly. Her inspiring design is from the heart and in memory of her son Caleb.
