Mary’s work is ornate and full of life and movement. She likes to tell stories with her paintings, many of which are inspired by poetry or iconic figures. She creates large scale, abstract paintings in acrylic on wood.
Creating this butterfly took me on a fantastic, emotional journey I didn’t expect. I named my butterfly “Flutter” in recognition of those who “flutter” between two worlds. I wanted it to look like it floated out of a child’s imagination. Using the whimsical shape of the butterfly structure provided, I filled it with intricate design and amazing color. A variety of insects are painted and hidden through the wings, flower and base, such as dragonflies, beetles, bumblebees, snails and caterpillars. I wanted my artistic vision to be something a child would connect to, and that the intricate design would invite the audience to closely inspect, read, interact and become more eager to learn about Wings.
A poem is painted around its base:
"Flutter"
I’ve always wanted wings like a butterfly
to carry me through worlds only I can imagine,
realms of translucent color and softness,
… places I’d never wear shoes.
