Thomas’s work is inspired by her extensive travel throughout Europe, Asia and South America. Her mixed media works address themes of an identity between cultures. Imagery from childhood, travel, and everyday living fuse to express her conception of a global home.
For “Haiku” I drew inspiration from the work of Kobayashi Issa, a great haikai poet of Japan’s Edo period. While his life was full of trials and misfortune, Issa faced these things with optimism and tender humor, earning him a reputation as the champion of small things--sparrows, butterflies, children. I enjoyed spending my summer with bright paints and a giant butterfly, an experience which transported me to the carefree days of childhood.
