Inspiration:

After learning about Wings, I felt a whole range of emotions – hope, comfort and tenderness, but at the same time, sadness and melancholy. A child dealing with life-threatening illness is a sadness of the worst kind. I began to empathize with the children and families and the feelings and thoughts they must experience.

I wanted my butterfly, named “Celebration,” to capture those dichotomous thoughts and feelings of uncertainty and hope experienced by these children and their families. I wanted to create an overarching symbol of celebration, triumph and life. The butterfly signifies strength and the courage to rise above the impossible and celebrate life. No life too small, no illness too great – the human spirit forever perseveres!
