Inspiration:

My butterfly, “Joyful Flight,” was inspired by the transformation of the butterfly from its chrysalis. To me, that intimate moment represents the freedom that joy brings – an absence of fear, pain and disease when one is happy and filled with joy, a true, spiritual lightness of being where I feel that I can fly.

I brought this feeling to life in the sculpture through bright, happy colors on the wings, rich gold, purple and teal on the body, organic greens on the leaves and reflective silver on the base. I made an organic mosaic through a layering of colors with a sponge and light brush technique. The iridescent coating shimmers in the sun and adds depth to the colors. The glowing look adds the perception of a light, airy feeling just as I had hoped – as if the butterfly was still glistening from its release of the chrysalis.
