Artist: The Community School-David Lang
Under the design direction of David Lang, Art Teacher at The Community School, each student from Nursery to Sixth Grade had a hand in creating and forming all the detailed components of Juniper T. Butterfly. The project allowed each to provide individual expression while coming together as one school family.
Inspiration:
A big part of education at the Community School includes recognizing and honoring each student’s individuality. We decided that the Community School butterfly should also highlight individuality by allowing each student to participate in the creation of the project. Every student created a butterfly or flower to help decorate the butterfly. In addition to helping cover the sculpture with artwork, students from the sixth grade brainstormed a list of names for the project. The name “Juniper” was chosen to represent our butterfly because the juniper plant feeds the caterpillars of a variety of butterflies.
