Whether it is with paint, paper collage or found objects, Natalie brings a unique perspective to each piece she creates. She gains much of her inspiration from her two children and her true joy is helping is helping others make a difference in their lives through art and design.
I wanted this piece to represent the “transformation” that families endure while they deal with the illness and possible death of a child. These families deal with bleak moments, and yet, out of this darkness the pure light of the child shines through.
I started this project using wire and metal, which were new materials for me. They were difficult to manipulate and I became frustrated. I started painting instead and covered the butterfly in grey paint. I felt so dismal about the project – it was truly bleak. Then it hit me…this might be how WINGS families feel. This realization helped me find beauty and hope within my project. I bought paint and glitter. I asked artist friends to donate found, shiny objects. From then on, I felt the light. The colors took over and my design soared. In the end, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and love for the project and those that are a part of WINGS. It is my hope that this love – the true essence of a child – is celebrated and remembered.
