Artist: Jennifer Hendrich Cayton
Jennifer is an architect recently awarded the William Tao prize from Washington University in St. Louis, Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, for excellence in sustainable and building envelope strategies. Her talent and her heart are evident in her butterfly design, which features the handprints of all of the children from this summer’s Stepping Stones Camp for grieving children.
Inspiration:
From my initial thought about the design of the butterfly to the final piece, I felt it was important to involve children. To do this, I attended Stepping Stones, a camp held each year by BJC Hospice and Palliative Care for children who had lost a loved one. I collected handprints from the 59 children at camp as well as symbols representing the child or their lost loved one.
